God is at the centre of our lives and as a schoolcommunity we try to grow in love and care byfollowing the example of Jesus.
Our children embrace their learning in RE and understand that this is a special time to learn more about their faith.
They say:
‘I love my RE lessons because I like learning about what Jesus did and I am trying to be more like Jesus.’
‘I like it when we learn through art that help me to understand the stories we are learning about.’
‘RE is my favourite because we talk about what Jesus did and how he helped people in need.’
We follow the Discerning Disciples curriculum (introduced in September 2026) in its entirety. This is a progressive Catholic Religious Education curriculum for RE in the Archdiocese of Birmingham which aligns with the Religious Education Directory (‘To know you more clearly’). It supports the shared mission of our family of schools: forming Christ-centred pilgrims of hope with kind hearts, questioning minds, a thirst for knowledge and a hunger for justice.
The curriculum is structured around six core branches mapped across the half-terms of the academic year:
Autumn 1: Creation and Covenant - explores Genesis, human dignity and God’s loving
relationship with people.
Autumn 2: Prophecy and Promise - focuses on Advent, the prophets and the Annunciation
Spring 1: Galilee to Jerusalem - follows Jesus’ ministry, teachings and miracles
Spring 2: Desert to Garden - experiences Lent, repentance and the Paschal mystery
Summer 1: To the Ends of the Earth - studies the early Church, Pentecost and the work of the apostles.
Summer 2: Dialogue and Encounter - focuses on interfaith understanding and meeting God in others
There are four knowledge lenses: Hear (Scripture)
Believe (Church teaching)
Celebrate (liturgy/prayer)
Live (application to daily life)
There are three ways of knowing: Understand (secure knowledge)
Discern (critical/reflective thinking)
Respond (personal / moral application)
10% of teaching time during the week is given to teaching and learning in RE; this usually takes the form of two extended lessons.
