Welcome to Year 2! We are so pleased to have you back and are looking forward to seeing all of the fabulous things you can do this year!

In Year 2, you will learn how to become more independent and improve your super skills.

Miss Dainty's favourite subjects to teach are History, Geography, English and Art, so make sure you let her know all about your favourite books, places and creations! heart

Daily Business

School Timings

We are pleased to be back to everyone starting at 8:45am and finishing at 3:20pm.

It is important to be reading regularly and ideally, each day. Reading books will be sent home on Mondays and will be changed towards the end of the week. Your child may receive additional phonics books throughout the term to read at home.

We will be giving out our brand new Homework Diaries this term, where you can comment on what your child has read and how they are getting on with reading at home. Encourage your child to read daily and talk about what they have to check understanding.

You can also use Oxford Owl:

( Username: stmaryscannockyear2         Password: year2 )

or your own books from home.

This term, Y2 children will have daily phonics lessons in small groups and will continue to follow the reading part of the RWI scheme. In late November, Y2 will be taking their Phonics Screening Assessment that was rescheduled from Y1. Anyone who does not pass this term will be able to try again in the summer. More information on this will follow.

Educational Games

As well as reading, children should also practise their spelling, handwriting, number bonds and times tables (x2, x5, x10) as often as possible.

You can also use your IXL, Spelling Shed, TTR, j2blast (BGFL) accounts to keep improving and show me your progress. Keep those logins safe and enjoy!

Other things to learn at school and home are how to tie your laces, know the days of the week and months of the year in order, tell the time and use a ruler effectively to measure and to draw straight lines.    smiley

What to wear? cool

The Autumn term is full of weather surprises and we will be doing lots of outside work, so make sure your child has a coat and appropriate footwear each dayKeep an eye on the weather forecasts to plan for additional warm clothes or caps and sunglasses!  Don't forget you can also wear your school hoody, as our classroom can often be cold in winter.

Please wear PE uniforms and feel free to bring an extra water bottle on PE days (Mondays and Wednesdays). Make sure long hair is tied back and earrings are taken out before school on these days. Y2 afterschool PE club will be on Mondays (see newsletters or ask at the office for more info).

Food and Drink:

KS1 children receive free school meals and fruit. They can also bring their own packed lunch and a healthy snack. Children will be given a drink at lunch time, but please make sure they have a water bottle in school each day as the water fountains are still not being used.

Health and Safety:

Please don’t send children in with show and tell objects unless you have been in contact beforehand. Instead, send a photograph via the office or BGFL so that we can share objects / experiences safely. Thank you.

Please read the letter given out on 10th September regarding extra health precautions in Year 2. Inform the school if your child has any illnesses, whether or not they will be attending school. Also, please follow the school and government Covid advice regarding symptoms, testing and isolations. In the event of isolations / lockdowns, work will be emailed to you and also available via BGFL.

Please contact the office if you have any questions or queries and they will pass on your messages and ensure your contact details are up to date with the school.
