Well done Y5!
It was a delight and pleasure to watch Y5 students from St Mary's perform with 300 other children from the West Midlands and Black Country at St Matthew's Church in Walsall today. I arrived during the lunch hour and have to commend the children from St Mary's on their excellent and notably respectful behaviour within the church environment. They were beautifully turned out in full uniform and were a credit to their teachers and to the school.
Unfortunately I missed their performance of "Believe" this morning but my colleague, Kevin Stannard, reported back very positively on the musicality of their interpretation and their enthusiasm. Particular praise must go to Mrs Thackham for her energy and commitment to the development of music at St Mary's generally, but especially to this Festival of Voices celebration. She has been indefatigable in learning the songs in a very short period of time and teaching them to the children. Some of the songs were very challenging in terms of complex rhythms, foreign languages and two/three part harmony. I watched the children from St Mary's very closely and can report that they joined in confidently with all of the songs this afternoon and demonstrated a range of musical skills from following a conductor, to employing varying levels of dynamics, shaping phrases and interpreting the music with a great deal of sensitivity. Miss Dainty also deserves praise for finding space for learning the songs in an already very packed curriculum.
I hope that the children themselves enjoyed their day out, meeting peers and sharing performances. They should all feel justifiably proud of themselves.

Information Evening - Drugs and Alcohol Awareness Raising
Deciding how, when and if you should talk to your children about drugs and alcohol can be difficult.
Questions like 'Are they too young? 'How much do they need to know?' and 'Do they even need to know at all?' are common and ones that lots of parents struggle with.
In reality yes children do need to be spoken to about drugs in the same way they need to be spoken to about changes to their bodies, e-safety, bullying and a range of other sensitive topics. There may well be a time in your child's life when they are offered drugs and it is crucial they are aware of the dangers and are resilient enough to say no.
Join us on 14th November at 7pm at Saint Thomas More Primary school in Great Wyrley, Huthill Lane, WS6 6PG for an informal workshop which should answer all of the above questions and more. The workshop will include a refresher on what drugs and alcohol are, how they affect you, signs and symptoms, current trends and talking to your children.
The session will be delivered by Amy Carter from ACE Drug Training and light refreshments will be provided on the evening.
We love our library!
Our library is really well looked after, thanks to the efforts of Mrs Harris and Mrs Richardson. We would like to see parents use this lovely area after school. Come in, choose a book and share with your child. Of course, children need to be accompanied by a parent.

We Are Saving Paper
We are going to make more use of our technology and cut down on the paper we send out of school. Sometimes letters stay in children's bags and key messages can be lost. Please check your text messages and emails regularly and make sure that any change of detail is notified to the school. We will trial this until the end of the Summer Term. Parents who require a printed letter can request this from the school office. Thank you.

Letter to parents from governors 10 Feb 2017
The governors met this week to consider a number of options regarding succession planning for a new headteacher for St Mary's Catholic Primary School. This is in light of two recent attempts to appoint a headteacher at our school.
I am sure that parents will be in agreement with the governors that they are looking for the best candidate for our school and that this search should continue until that aim is met.
With this in mind, a number of options have been explored.
I am pleased to tell you that there are arrangements in place for the continuing successful leadership in our school. Mr Breeze will be continuing for the next academic year and will be supported in the headship role by Miss Wayman. They will job share this role which is a model of leadership which appears to be on the increase!
In moving ahead in this way, we have secured the ongoing leadership for our school for the next academic year, whilst the appointments process for the new headteacher continues.

*St Mary’s annual Easter egg hunt isn’t too far away from us. We are trialling a new strategy for this event and are asking parents if it’s possible to donate Easter eggs (big or small) chocolate bunnies etc towards this. Perhaps you own a shop or have connections within this area and would be able to help with this!

St. Mary's Sponsored Walk to Lapland!
It is 2378 miles to Lapland from Cannock. Or thereabouts. All children are asked to walk their legs off w/c 26th September. This will include walks in school but we would like to hear of any innovative extra walks you and your family might be doing. Add up the miles and let your teacher know!
We hope that by combining our miles together, we can reach Lapland.
This website will give you an update each day as to the progress made by the children as well as news on the most interesting walks undertaken.
Most importantly, we want EVERY child to take part and to gain lots of sponsors. Money raised is for our children in our school so please get involved and get walking!
